Dementia does cruel things to people. Those around the demented can hardly recognize the personality that once inhabited the body that is so familiar. Conversations rarely have any sense to them. That’s how it is with me and my mother. When I’m ready to leave her after visiting for a while, though, she never fails to say, “Thank you so much for coming.”
